I’ve always loved the beach. There's a shared intimacy between people and their beach:

I've seen my beach in all its forms. In clear blue skies and lashing rain. Crowded by people and completely deserted. Fresh-faced in the morning and glowing in its red evening gown.

It's seen me in all my forms, too. A pensive child and playful woman. Hosted first dates and last ones. Felt my laugh tickling on the wind and the cold bite of my silence.

Unlike at work or a club or even at home; The beach never demands playing a role. It just hosts whatever is.

Only to come back the next day and it's all been washed away; a blank canvas.

I wanted a Starting Over piece that captured this:

First: the hat. A ridiculous, vibrant helmet. The rainbow of emotions bottled inside Finn's head. Each colour waiting for release. Finn embraces the gamut of emotions, releasing them to the tide instead of drowning in them.

Today, he paints a burst of yellow surrounded by a melancholic blue. We know that one burst of happiness doesn't make all the blue disappear. But Finn takes matters into his own hands by making his surroundings brighter instead of waiting for them to change.

Expressing how he wants. Dressing how he wants.

Loving who he wants. However he decides to be that day, it's ok. It's another form for his beach to witness.
